I am novice when it comes to stock market and there are numerous tools and technologies available for doing market analysis on the go
However I believe we should also know how to create such fancy visualization which we often see on broker website or moneycontrol, etc and everyone must create their own analysis and keep checking their returns using tools like Excel or visualization tool such as Power BI or Tableau
Okay, without wasting time lets see a simple dashboard of Indian stock market since 1990 !!!
The data used here is a real time data from BSE site => Historical - Indices (bseindia.com)
The data transformation step is important here though its simple but in order to do accurate analysis we do require certain additional steps. The steps involved are as follow:
Create a column and named it as Category in each data sources queries
Append all source in order to create one single database
Ensure the date is in correct date format
The data was downloaded since 1990 on yearly basis for several segments and indices
Report View - Home Page
The landing page shows us Year in Year (YoY %) since 1990 and an option to select the indices
Sensex is continuously giving return of 6%, 14%,15% and 22% respectively in the last 4 years. We can infer that sensex has seen tremendous incline in last 5 consecutive years defying covid pandemic and market is bullish past 5 years
On right side we can compare various indices to understand where was the highest return received and the answer is small cap
Report View - Segment
On another page, we can compare returns for a given year by segments and their trendline on right side
Power Segment has received the highest return in 2021 (68%) vis a vis year ago and FMCG was the least with just 9.3%
2020 - year of worst pandemic ever
Similarly in the year 2020 as we all know that the world was going through Covid pandemic and the effect is quite visible in terms of return ( 61.4% in 2020 vs 2019) where as in previous years Healthcare returns were meagre and were in negative!
IT industry has given whooping 56% return continuously in last 2 years :) and double digit returns YoY since 2017 :)
Similarly we can analyse various other segments and invest for long term capital gain
Another example: Large cap return was 14% on an average since 2012 and barring year 2015, it has given positive return. How much return did other savings scheme gave in just 10 years? Compare and choose wisely :)
